Books for your holiday gift list

“You can’t get a cup of tea big enough or a book long enough to suit me.”
– C. S. Lewis

To bring this list to you, several independently owned bookstores on the Cape were polled for their suggestions on the latest books that are currently receiving good customer reviews. We asked for books that would be about Cape Cod, set on Cape Cod, or written by Cape Cod authors. Here are some of the top choices, in no particular order.

A Cape Cod Notebook
by Robert Finch
This collection of essays is culled from the award winning (Edward R. Murrow Award for excellence in radio writing) WGBH radio show of the same name. The book is a delightful read divided into four seasons’ worth of gems. Finch has written several other renowned essay collections about Cape Cod, such as The Primal Place, and lives in Wellfleet.

Morning of Fire
by Scott Ridley
The story of Captain John Kendrick, a sea captain born in Harwich, Massachusetts. In 1787 Kendrick made the first American voyage around Cape Horn into the Pacific to discover the Northwest Passage, establish an American outpost, and set up trade with China. The book will satisfy any history buff’s longing for maritime adventure and knowledge about this lost chapter of the Nation’s early years.

Pieces of Eight
by Joshua Blair Delaney
In April 1717, pirate Sam Bellamy and his treasure ship and crew washed ashore in a storm off what is now Marconi Beach on Cape Cod. This thoroughly researched and well written fictional account transports the reader back to colonial Cape Cod–an era when pirates, natives, colonists, clergy and suspected witches were all part of the local scene. Recently optioned by 6A Productions for a Hollywood movie.

Eva & Henry: A Cape Cod Marriage
by Irene M. Paine
A novel set in the nineteenth century fishing village of South Wellfleet, based upon the actual lives of a young couple and their community as they are caught up in the death throes of the sailing fishing fleet which had sustained the Cape Cod economy for many decades. While Eva and Henry face the inevitable conflicts that arise in a marriage, they must also face life-altering choices in order to survive in a changing world. Winner of the 2011 Independent Publisher’s Silver Medal Award for Best Regional Fiction.

Caleb’s Crossing
by Geraldine Brooks
A novel about the life and times of the Martha’s Vineyard Wampanoag who attended Harvard College and graduated in 1665. How did it come to be that Caleb Cheeshahteau-mauk attended college with the sons of Puritans and at what costs to his people? Well researched by Pulitzer Prize winner Brooks, and intricately set into the stratified seventeenth century mindset, a very good story, based upon the scant facts available about Caleb and fleshed out with believable fictional characters.

Out of the Woods: Healing Lyme Disease–Body, Mind & Spirit
by Katina I. Makris, CCH, CIH
A finalist for the USA Book of the Year Award 2011. Part recovery memoir and part resource guide, this book provides vital emotional and spiritual support. Rooted in the author’s personal experience, deep understanding of alternative medicine, and poetic
connection to nature, the book transcends the boundaries of any one disease to reaffirm the power of hope for anyone grappling with illness.

House on Oyster Creek by Heidi Jon Schmidt
A contemporary novel set in Wellfleet.

Left Neglected by Lisa Genova

Have your cake & eat it,too!

Chances are if you haven’t gone gluten-free in your diet yourself, you know someone who has. At one time it was thought you had to have celiac disease to have issues with gluten; now we know better, and folks who are “gluten sensitive” are also eschewing it as well.

What exactly is gluten? It’s a mixture of proteins that are found in wheat, rye and barley, which are not soluble in water and give wheat dough its elastic texture. For people who have celiac disease, or are gluten sensitive, their bodies react to gluten as an invasion, gearing up their immune systems to fight against a perceived toxin. For those with this sensitivity it can cause digestive, heart and liver problems, and everything from joint pain to fertility challenges.

Since gluten is in everything from bread to soy sauce, eating out can be quite a challenge. Some restaurants offer gluten-free options, but it can be a bit of a minefield for folks to navigate.

It was for this very reason that Debbie Collins decided to open her South Yarmouth restaurant, IDGY’s. Open since May 1, IDGY’s has become the go-to place for people seeking delicious meals, breads, desserts and snacks. A cozy little place right on White’s Path, you can eat in or get your food to go.

“I’m not gluten sensitive, nor is anyone in my family,” says Collins. “People expressed frustration to me at the cross contamination in restaurants, and the lack of options in eating away from home. I wondered if there would be enough demand for it, and so far it’s been great.”

Collins says the absolute best advertising they’ve had is word of mouth from satisfied customers. People who are part of celiac groups have been spreading the word and letting people know there’s a place where they can actually get pizza! And bagels! And mac and cheese!

“It’s a very rewarding feeling,” she says. “Sometimes I have a hard time getting baking done because people want to talk about how glad they are to have a place to go to. That’s a great feeling.”

It’s hard enough to have dietary limits as an adult, but it’s even more challenging to be a child who can’t eat what all their friends are having. That is something IDGY’s has done their best to fix.

“We’re trying very hard to meet the needs of kids and teens and giving them options for all the things they see friends ordering like cookies and pizza. Kids are thrilled to be able to have pizza again.”

IDGY’s has a commitment to buying local and makes everything from their English muffins to their marinara sauce in-house. For people who haven’t been able to have a sandwich for perhaps years, having a place to get something as simple as an egg sandwich is a huge treat.

“At breakfast French toast and waffles are very popular,” Collins says. “And they get really excited about being able to have an actual egg sandwich on a homemade gluten-free English muffin. At lunch people love the paninis. We created a recipe that really enhances the flavor; it’s not like a bread substitute that tastes like cardboard.”

Right now there is only one IDGY’s, but Collins has high hopes that before too long she will be able to expand. She’s mindful however that she wants to keep the purity and commitment to the quality that is so important to her and her team.

“I want to only serve real food, nothing processed. We even make our own breadcrumbs,” she says. “People respond to fresh food more than processed. What we offer is much healthier than a fast food place.”
After having been gluten-free for four years, Mary Lou Foley of Brewster was ecstatic to find a place she could eat without worrying about what might be lurking in the food.

“When I sit down with my husband at IDGY’s it’s refreshing to be able to order whatever I want on the menu. When I go to most restaurants I have to be a detective and try to figure out what I can have, and sometimes it just ends up being a hamburger without a bun. It’s so nice to be able to go out and feel like everyone else. And the good thing is it’s so delicious even family members who aren’t gluten sensitive love it, too. There’s no sacrifice of texture or taste, and that’s a rare find.”

Deb’s latest venture includes extending her delicious foods to a gluten-free catering business. You can now book IDGY’s for your own personal party or event.

Collins has been inspired by the support and word-of-mouth passion for IDGY’s that she’s found. It’s something she doesn’t take for granted, and she wants to keep providing her customers with delicious food they can eat without worry and enjoy.

“This is hard work; I put in a lot of hours. But every day I love coming here and giving people something I feel so good about, that they can feel good about eating. The support I feel from the community and our customers who want to see us succeed makes it all worth it.” -cha

Here we are on the threshold of the warily awaited mega-year 2012, counting down to December 21, 2012. This date and its mystique have captured the public’s imagination like no other. With misinformation, speculation, fear, hope and hype abounding, many are fearing cataclysmic Apocalypse, while others are envisioning a seamless transition into a golden age of paradisal bliss in the twinkling of an eye, and others are rolling their eyes at all the nonsense over yet another world expiration date.

So what’s all the hubbub about? A host of factors contribute to all “the end of the world” buzz, not the least among them are the deeply disturbing realities we face environmentally, economically, politically and socially, which seem to be escalating so exponentially that only an end to our mad, mad world would seem to remedy. However, the primary factor is the Mayan one, most widely promulgated by José Argüelles in the 1980’s with his promotion of the Harmonic Convergence in August of 1987 and his book The Mayan Factor, which introduced the Mayan Calendar and its end date of December 21, 2012 to the general public. While most Mayan scholars and independent researchers are not in agreement with the artistic license he took with the number crunching of the Mayan Calendar, or his extraterrestrial take on it all, most do agree, “with a couple of exceptions”, with the date of December 21, 2012 which was established by Mayan researchers in the early 1950’s. One thing they all agree on, however, is that nowhere in the Mayan’s calendar or artifacts do they predict the end of the world on this date. The Mayan Calendars are based on cosmic cycles. Cycles begin and end without end.

The basics on the Mayan Calendar and the 2012 date break down something like this: The Mayans had highly advanced and intricate time-keeping systems with, not one, but many interlinking calendars. The calendar that is completing is their “long-count” calendar consisting of five cyclic World Ages called Suns, each 5,125.36 years in length. We are now at the end of the Fifth World Age, which began on August 11, 3114 BC and is due to end on Winter Solstice, December 21, 2012 with a simultaneous reboot and recreation of a new World Age. According to John Major Jenkins, an independent researcher of the Mayan culture (the first to discover the significance of this date both astronomically and cosmologically), the big deal about December 21, 2012 is that it’s not only the end of the fifth and last World Age, but it coincides with the end of a much greater 26,000 year precession cycle, caused by the wobble in the earth’s axis which causes our view of the celestial backdrop to slowly shift over time. A very rare galactic alignment will occur on this date between the Winter Solstice sun and the galactic equator, in the dark-rift area at the center of the Milky Way. Actually, the winter solstice sun has been incrementally aligning with the galactic equator at the center of the Milky Way since around 1980 and will continue to until 2016. It was, in fact, closest to the midpoint in 1997-98, but according to Jenkins, the Mayans were more interested in the sun’s conjunction, specifically, with the dark-rift area which played a central part in their creation mythology.

In the Mayan creation mythology, the dark-rift of the Milky Way, called Xibalba be, the road to the underworld or the black road, is also considered the birth canal of the Cosmic Mother, or First Mother. The Winter Solstice sun signifies the Mayan deity Hunahpu, also called First Father. According to Jenkins, this once-in-26,000-years alignment of First Father and First Mother, symbolizes the rebirth of the First Father from the womb of the Cosmic Mother, initiating a vast cosmic renewal and new World Age. Jenkins describes this galactic alignment as a “transformative nexus in time, a still point, a turn about, inviting us to reconnect with our cosmic heart and eternal source.”

A fascinating new light was shed on the Solstice sun and dark-rift galactic alignment event when one year ago, in November 2010, astrophysicists discovered two huge gamma-ray bubbles radiating 50,000 light years above and below the galactic plane at the center of the galaxy, shaped like a massive figure eight. The photon energy being emitted is equivalent to 100,000 supernovas exploding! Scientists do not know the origin of these gamma-ray structures, but one theory is that they may have erupted from the super massive black hole at the center of our galaxy. As far as I have been able to determine, none of the Mayan Calendar researchers or 2012-ologists have weighed in on the significance of this discovery.

Although highly intriguing, just what the endings and beginnings of the Mayan Calendar’s vast cosmic cycles ultimately signify remains, for now, a mystery yet to be revealed. The 2012 phenomena, with its imagery of mass destruction and chaos, and mass awakening and transformation of consciousness, couldn’t be more illustrative of the Uranus and Pluto square whose approach I have been writing about here for a number of years. (Check out past articles at chamagazine.com) Although we are already in the midst of the accelerated change; chaos, upheaval and uprisings that ensue when Uranus and Pluto make contact, there’s lots more at the door, as this transit won’t be exact until June 2012, but once it does hit precisely, it will occur a whopping seven times between June 2012 and March 2015! My professional opinion is whoa! That’s a lot of shakin’ and shiftin’ going on!

This is the first time these two mover and shakers have confronted in a major way since the Sixties. Uranus and Pluto are both potent agents of radical change. Pluto, the mover, signifies from the bottom-up, slow-moving, deep, inexorable, cathartic, evolutionary change, while Uranus, the shaker, signifies the lightning bolt out of a blue sky, now-for-something-entirely-different, sudden, chaotic, revolutionary, and liberating variety. When these two planets make contact they galvanize life, ushering in fundamental and sweeping transformations from earth to sky, both literally and figuratively. Their influence is in evidence around the world in extreme weather patterns, earthquakes, volcanic activity, in the outbreak of worldwide economic and political instability and volatility, the Arab Spring, tyrants toppling, the Tea Party and the Occupy Wall Street movement that has swept the globe, to mention only a few of the most obvious examples. Another is the explosion in all directions of information technology which is transforming and revolutionizing our lives in more ways than we have time to reflect upon. These energies do not just manifest as outer events in our lives, but their greater significance lies in the changes sparked within. These are consciousness-raising energies that ignite quantum leaps in consciousness, shifting and transforming our views of reality.

We live in “interesting” times, to say the least. I will continue writing about these times and the 2012 phenomenon in more depth and detail in the Spring issue of cha. Stay tuned… - cha

Cocodrillo

I have no idea where my house keys are.
I’m sure they’re somewhere but I don’t care to lock
the world out.
I tell you this because what could anyone
possibly steal?
Forty two dollars in my sock drawer?
The kids drawings off the fridge?
Thieves would get lost in the mire of a modern life,
the laptops we peek over to make sure
we’re still married.
“Are the kids setting any fires?”
We used to run drunk and naked
around this neighborhood.
I felt alive, howling and falling over laughing.

This is stupid.
Come with me and we’ll strip off these clothes,
walk into the woods,
live on blackberries and small mammals,
toadstools off rotten pine logs.
“These are okay, the ones with the ridges and spots,
I think. You go first.”
We’d bed in the rushes by the cranberry bog,
wake to the sound of birds, swat at mosquitos,
put our hands in the ochre and paint signs to hang
in the treetops:
“Leave us alone.”

In Costa Rica, the sign by the river said
“PELIGRO – Cocodrillos en el rio.”
“That’s just for the tourists.” Carlos explained.
“Gives them something to take a picture next to.”
I laughed and jumped in.
Later, walking, we saw him sunning: frozen,
eyes fixed, a plastic replica.
Then the barely perceptible movement of his tail.
“You let me swim in a river with a crocodile?”
Carlos grinned at my horror, “We leave him alone.
He’s too small to bother you.”
Being bothered wasn’t on my mind.
He knows these things.
He is connected to this place.

In America this animal would be dead or caged,
his journey to the sea creating fear to be pacified,
his part in the landscape we simply cannot abide.

Today my country will kill men like Carlos,
with toy planes flown by our children from bunkers
in Nevada, scanning foreign landscapes of mud
and straw houses on the virtual battlefront,
signs painted on each roof:
“Leave us alone.”
They drop bombs
to pacify, to justify,
to pay for our obese lifestyle,
erase perceived threats,
lock them out or lock us in.
Are the keys for them or us?

When they ask “What did you do in the war, Grandpa?”
I’ll say “I sighed and shook my head at the stupidity of it all. And I didn’t lock my door.”

–Thomas Fettig

Tom Fettig is a writer and lyricist, tile contractor, crackpot farmer, and the inimitable voice of the Bitter and Broken Men’s Chorus. The former frontman for the punk band Philthshack, he now lives in Orleans with his 30-year mortgage, tolerable wife, two miraculous children, two bedhog mutts, and five hens conspiring to take over the property.

Home

Trust only one sky
and yesterday will not
bleed brilliant poison
or haunt present magic.

Let God question eternity
and we but live, linger, dazzle
in the night, morning, day.

Our poetry is the child
born of dark sacrifice
and the sacred embrace
of change.

Listen, laugh, dance
and remember:
perhaps there is joy
in the learning.

– Kristin Knowles

Kristin Knowles is an artist, writer, performance poet, political activist, educator, and ambitious thrift shopper. She lives in Orleans with her husband, Tom Fettig, and the whole cast of characters listed in his bio.

The Story isn’t Over Yet

A giant can slip on a marble.
A mountain can split from a single crack.
A smile or a frown, an act of kindness
can save the world or cause it to drown.
The hard-hearted forces are many and huge.
The story that is written is written in blood.
But the story that is whispered from ear to ear,
the small, indestructible gift of love
that passes from hand to hand
has time and gravity on its side.
And the story isn’t over yet…

– Chuck Madansky

Chuck Madansky, who co-hosts the Cape Cod Daré (see page 37) along with his wife, Wilderness Sarchild, lives by Rafe Pond in Brewster, where he recovers his tenderness by long looking.

Kristin Knowles on creating “The Art of Dissent” Series

My activism began as a reaction to feeling powerless to do anything about the multitude of things happening in the world – which disturbed me deeply. As someone who has always struggled with depression and maladaptive ways to deal with inner turmoil, I turned to the more positive outlet of writing. I wrote for myself, for personal catharsis. Over time I timidly began to share my work with others. What I discovered is that I was not alone. My words resonated with many people, more than I had ever imagined. Then, I summoned up the courage to read my work in public. Soon people started asking me to perform at events for causes related to the words I had written. All of a sudden I realized I was no longer powerless. I had become a voice.

“Be a voice, not an echo.” – Rev. William Barber, President of the N.C. NAACP

The “Art of Dissent” open mike series was conceived with the hope of fostering activism and community by creating an accessible public forum where our voices can be shared and heard. It is also a rare opportunity to be inspired and informed by the work of others whose art speaks of and to the human condition and the world in which we live.

Democracy requires participation. Molly Ivins, a personal hero of mine, asserted that “Dissent is what rescues democracy from a quiet death behind closed doors.” If we want adequate representation, we must first represent and advocate for ourselves, our families and our communities. If not now, when? If not you, who? As one of my poems suggests:
“We all have a voice and the ability to speak in all the colors of the spectrum. Paint your words with passion. Please, speak.”

Visit the Calendar for the next scheduled “Art of Dissent” event.

The Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom

The “Art of Dissent” series is sponsored by the Cape Cod branch of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF), an NGO (non-governmental organization) that has sections in 40 countries on every continent, consultative status at the United Nations, and offices in Geneva and New York. WILPF is the oldest women’s peace organization in the world. It was founded in April 1915 by some 1300 women from Europe and North America who came together in a Congress of Women to protest the killing and destruction of the war then raging in Europe.

Today WILPF’s ultimate goal is the establishment of an international economic order founded on the principles of meeting the needs of all people and not on those of profit and privilege. WILPF works to analyze, educate, inform, and mobilize people locally, nationally, and globally on issues of peace, human rights, universal disarmament, conflict prevention and resolution, eliminating all forms of discrimination, and environmental stewardship toward sustainable development.

The Cape Cod branch of WILPF meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Harwich Community Center from 6:00-8:30pm. Potluck at 6:00; meeting begins at 6:45.

Much has been said about the torturous aspects of writing. Ernest Hemingway joked, “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” Oscar Wilde lamented, “I was working on the proof of one of my poems all the morning, and took out a comma. In the afternoon I put it back again.” Virginia Woolf agonized, “For it would seem that we write, not with the fingers, but with the whole person. The nerve which controls the pen winds itself about every fiber of our being, threads the heart, and pierces the liver.” So why do writers begin to write at all if the act was perceived by such giants to be so frustrating?

Thankfully, people do write and produce the books that mean so much to us. My mother banished the television from our house in the early sixties, and so my escape was found in books. My siblings and I grew up reading what had been my mother’s favorites: The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Little Women, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, The Diary of Anne Frank and everything by Charles Dickens. I know all my childhood reading helped me to become a writer—a secret writer for many years. But the real fun began in 2006 when, at fifty years old, I decided to devote myself to penning the first draft of a novel, Eva and Henry, A Cape Cod Marriage. My self-given assignment was to honor my own great grandaunt for the challenges she endured in the 1880’s as the wife of a mariner. I researched the coastal village and the greater world in which my characters had lived and began to write.

To my delight, the discipline of writing quickly became an enjoyable experience. I looked forward to immersing myself in another place and time when I sat down to write, and was soon living a double life. I discovered that once a character is fully drawn and present in the work, I could depend upon surprises. At any time, the character might seize control and bend the plot to his or her own purposes. Eva became so strong a force that she declared to me, “ I want to write it,” and the novel swung over from being written in the third person (she cried) to the first person (I cried).

I found the five-year writing process to be very healing. The inspiring lives of long dead ancestors challenged me daily to be a braver person myself. It was impossible not to knead my own fears, hopes, and moral dilemmas into the work, and I was quite often relieved at how the answers were delivered back to my questioning mind through the tips of my own fingers.

There are many writers who live here on Cape Cod, and I presented several with the question, “Why write?” Here are some answers from a variety of writing disciplines.
Eastham poet Barry Hellman, who enriches our community by hosting poetry readings and workshops, shares his experience of writing a poem. “There’s a lot of pleasure in writing a poem— experiencing where it wants to start, where it goes, where it ends up. The initial draft is full of preliminary ideas and feelings, raw material. I love the combination of clarity and mystery in a poem—the contrast between what’s tame and what’s wild. The way a poem leaves room for the reader or listener to go on their own trip in terms of memory or feeling.”

After practicing psychotherapy for many years, Hellman finds similar elements in the process of revision. “When writing a poem, it feels like I’m involved in an intimate conversation where both of us are paying attention to what’s going on in our lives. In the revision process you go deeper, find out something about what you really think and feel. There’s movement between conscious and unconscious, familiar and unfamiliar, between what’s said and what’s unsaid.” Hellman’s new book, The King of Newark, a collection of 26 of his poems, has just been published, right on time for holiday gift giving. It can be found at www.finishinglinepress.com.

Orleans bird-commentator Mike O’Connor, whose tongue-in-cheek newspaper column, Ask the Bird Folks appears weekly in the Cape Codder, feels compelled to write for the sake of the birds. “The rewards of writing are a little different for me,” he says. “I do it to answer lots of questions and correct the misinformation people have about birds. A lot of my customers seem to be people who don’t like nature in general. They might be happy to provide food for their own favorite species of birds, but they complain that crows are noisy, jays are mean, and squirrels are hogs. I try to set the record straight and throw in the wisecracks to make it interesting. There’s 350 species of birds that show up here on Cape Cod on a regular basis. I write so people will be less stressed about nature and look at birds from a more relaxing point of view. I mean, someone has to stick up for the cormorants and the piping plovers.”

O’Connor has written an informative and entertaining book: Why Don’t Woodpeckers Get Headaches? Of course, it’s a best seller at his Bird Watcher’s General Store. You may contact him with your own bird questions: birdwatchersgeneralstore.com

Laurie Higgins, a freelance journalist who tackles assignments for the Cape Codder and the Cape Cod Times as well as several local magazines, has always loved to write. You may have read profiles on your Cape Cod neighbors by Higgins, or arts and entertainment features. She enjoys writing a recipe-testing column, That’s Not What the Recipe Says. She does not take these assignments lightly.

“When I was a child, I was painfully shy,” Higgins explains. “Speaking in public at school or even family gatherings was painful. One of the things that I love the most about writing is that it gives me the opportunity to think deeply about what I want to say, and it allows me to express exactly how I feel or what I think. Writing offers me the freedom to go wild and stray off on different tangents to explore ideas, and then during the process of editing, I can really refine my thoughts so they reflect exactly what I meant to say. In that regard, I think writing offers me a means to find my voice and the courage to share it with others.”

Higgins challenges all writers with this last thought: “And finally, there is nothing more satisfying than writing one true sentence or finding the exact perfect metaphor or image to convey the essence of what you are trying to say on a level that goes much deeper than words.” Next time you see an article by Higgins, don’t skip it, it’ll be worth reading.

Cape author Scott Ridley sat down to a task that would be impossible for most of us. For four years he researched and sorted out the story of Captain John Kendrick, a sea captain born in Harwich, Massachusetts.

Morning of Fire, John Kendrick’s Daring American Odyssey in the Pacific has drawn crowds to readings both on and off-Cape for more than a year now, and when Ridley completes a session, he is reminded of one of the reasons he writes. “It is so gratifying to be there with people intent on hearing the story and to see how it affects them, how they become engaged with it.”

But what of the historical writing process itself, which can take many years? Ridley remarks in his own contemplative words on that:

“There is a process of journey and discovery in writing that I have always found to hold a kind of enchantment. As most writers will explain, you enter the landscape you’re working on and become absorbed in what is unfolding. If you’re lucky enough to be able to carve out large blocks of time, you sit down and start working and look up, and hours have passed. On the pages before you is what you have passed through, the people you’ve seen, the voices you’ve heard speaking, the emotions that flared up, and the moments of surprise.

“If it works, the reader is also transported along on the journey, with an immediacy in which their own imagination and experience light up what the words are saying. It’s a small light we strike in the darkness. And illuminating some missing piece of history that enriches understanding of who we are, and how we got to where we are, makes every dead end and cold night more than worthwhile,” Ridley finishes.

The oft repeated quote by English playwright Edward Bulwer-Lytton, “The pen is mightier than the sword,” has always moved me. How marvelously powerful to convey from one human mind to countless others (and by the concise depositing of little marks onto paper) concepts, intentions, emotions, human experience, and—illumination! Such is the nature of the practice of writing. – cha

Most people don’t expect to gain a deeper understanding of their whole health from a visit to the dentist. They don’t expect to be treated in a comfortable office setting with picture-window views overlooking a gentle river, or have complementary health services available on-site. But then, most people haven’t been to Herring River Holistic Family Dentistry, 129 Route 28 in West Harwich.

Dr. Ralph Tomasian has practiced in Harwich since 1972 with his recently retired brother Dr. Thomas Tomasian, Jr., who was instrumental in developing this unique oral health center. The two had been at the Herring River location since 1980. After Thomas retired, Ralph sold the dental practice about a year ago to Dr. Jairo Patino, a native of Colombia, who has practiced in Chicago and Boston. Dr. Tomasian still works with Dr. Patino, and the two share a passion for helping people improve their oral health in as toxin-safe an environment as possible. It’s a match that works ideally for one dentist edging toward retirement and another on his way up in the field.

“We were looking for a specific dentist when we decided to sell the practice, one with a holistic approach,” Dr. Tomasian says. “You treat the whole person. You’re not just teeth walking in. What we do in the mouth affects the whole body.”

For Dr. Patino, the Herring River practice was just the opportunity he was looking for to return to Massachusetts and utilize the holistic protocol he had discovered in his own care a few years ago. At that time, he found relief for longstanding health problems when he went to an alternative doctor who noticed he also had an infected root canal, for which he suggested dental extraction. “It changed my life,” Dr. Patino says. “I got better in three weeks.”

Drs. Tomasian and Patino believe the connection to people and what’s going on in their lives is the first step in guiding them toward health. Consequently, an initial visit for a new patient at Herring River Holistic Family Dentistry can take two to three hours. The visit includes a comprehensive dental exam, including a history and assessment of the teeth, gums, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and occlusion – the way in which upper and lower teeth come together. The exam looks not only at the mouth but also its connection to the rest of the body.

Dr. Tomasian explains that there’s a link between each tooth and another organ based on the acupuncture meridian it’s on. For instance, he cites a Swiss study by Dr. Thomas Rau that found a strong correlation between breast cancer and having had a root canal on an upper molar or lower bicuspid. Dr. Rau and his followers attribute the cancer connection to microbes hidden in the root canal, which they say suppress the immune system along the meridian.

The dentists discuss diet, nutrition, exercise and environment with their patients, too. “The whole key is to get the body in balance again,” says Dr. Tomasian. “We try to give them information about their general health that affects their teeth.”

Dr. Tomasian describes the dental practice as “a resource center,” and offers patients reading lists and details about improving their health through modalities such as “oil pulling,” in which coconut oil is swished in the mouth for 10 minutes at a time to reduce inflammation in the gums; chewing or cooking with xylatol, which changes the surface of tissues so microbes can’t attach; and “Earthing,” which grounds the body in a harmonious connection to the Earth and is considered to relieve stress, chronic fatigue and inflammation.

Patients who want to pursue these and other alternative treatments can also do so right in the same building with a visit to ayurvedic physician Dr. Linda J. Reynolds or acupuncturist Carin Trainer, who practice upstairs from the dentists.

Another hallmark of the holistic dental practice is its commitment to being mercury safe and to the extent possible, mercury free. The dentists use plastic composite fillings instead of silver amalgams, which contain mercury. Dr. Tomasian says the mercury is absorbed into the bloodstream and can cause depression, anxiety, loss of memory and other problems. “The mercury in silver fillings doesn’t belong in the mouth. It’s a neurotoxin,” Dr. Tomasian says.

The health effects of mercury in silver amalgams is a matter of debate in the dental world, but Dr. Tomasian and Dr. Patino are among those who believe it’s safest to minimize exposure. When they remove silver fillings, they use high-speed suction, a rubber dam in the mouth and high-speed filtration to contain the mercury as much as possible. Mercury levels are monitored in the mouth to assess any changes.

Drs. Tomasian and Patino believe comprehensive risk reduction and prevention help their patients heal directly, through nontoxic dental treatment, and indirectly. “Our patients have usually been looking for health everywhere when they come to us,” Dr. Patino says, describing how oral health often seems to be the missing piece of the health puzzle.

“It’s a holistic approach,” Dr. Tomasian concludes: “You don’t want to just treat the tooth.” – cha

Whether your office is in your spare bedroom or at a major corporation, you can make the workplace – and the world – more sustainable. Cape & Islands Green, a step-by-step verification program coordinated by the Sandwich, Hyannis Area, and Cape Cod chambers of commerce, helps businesses meet environmental goals.

Momentum is building as the first dozen businesses to go through Cape & Islands Green Level I verification share their experience and more businesses join the movement. “We’re trying to create a ripple effect,” says Amanda Converse, who oversees the program and provides technical assistance to businesses pursuing verification.

Structuring the program with achievable steps has proved helpful to organizations making eco-friendly changes. “We’re so busy doing our daily things, we don’t always realize our impact on the environment,” says Dawn Lucier, a physical therapist and neuro-education coordinator at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod in Sandwich. Lucier co-chairs the hospital’s Green Team with physical therapist and outpatient manager, Sharon Gale.

The challenge for hospitals’ energy-saving efforts is that they run 24/7, Lucier says. Spaulding staff members now turn off equipment that’s not in use. Working with vendors, the hospital has reduced supply shipments and catalogs, and switched to green cleaning products. Kitchen waste is composted. And when staff became aware of the state’s anti-idling statute through Cape & Islands Green, they contacted their primary ambulance company to request that waiting vehicles be turned off.

Cape Cod Five, which has for some time implemented green practices including recycling, reducing energy use and using electronic transactions, was eager to lead the way when Cape & Islands Green was launched. “As a relatively prominent business, it was appropriate for us to get in there right away,” says Chief Operating Officer Robert Talerman. “The only way it works is if everybody does their piece. This offered us the opportunity to do more.”

Talerman says Cape & Islands Green’s tiered progress levels make it business-friendly. “The hurdle of getting in isn’t that daunting.”

Besides working across the bank’s multiple sites, Cape Cod Five demonstrates commitment to sustainability through its charitable foundation. For instance, it supported a green building program at Cape Cod Regional Technical High School and a recycling project by CHAMP Homes.
While some businesses face more challenges than others to go green, Ellen Brady’s Cheap Chic Interiors in Hyannis is green by its very nature. “I use what people already have,” says the certified interior home redesigner and stager.

Still, she’s seen improvement since participating in Cape & Islands Green. Brady says, “The energy audit was especially revealing because my business is out of my house. We didn’t have any insulation in our walls.”

Brady plans to insulate her home and make it more energy efficient. She’s incorporating more sustainability into her work, too, like giving clients a list of how to recycle anything. “I definitely want to move on to Level II verification,” she says.

Dorothy Torrey, an alkaline food and lifestyle educator in Sandwich, says connecting with Cape & Islands Green is one way businesses can act locally to change the world. “It’s not just insulating the house and changing light bulbs: it’s changing a lifestyle.”

Torrey is using less paper and cutting waste in her home business. She’s also reducing solid waste from plastic water bottles – only 12 percent are recycled – by introducing people to healthy water from their tap.

Cape & Islands Green is going Cape-wide through a new collaboration with the Lower Cape’s Community Development Partnership (CDP). On March 11, the initiative, called “Smart Energy for the Lower Cape” will host a sustainability conference at Mass Audubon’s Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, along with Cape Light Compact and Cape & Islands Self-Reliance Corporation. The event will offer tools for small businesses to make significant changes in reducing their energy consumption. The Lower Cape CDP will offer their workshops beginning in mid-March.
Another Cape & Islands Green Level I workshop will be held April 5 at Spaulding Rehabilitation of Cape Cod in Sandwich.

Massage I Aesthetics I Polarity I RYSE

You deserve an education that honors who you are and who you are becoming.
A great education is spiritually transforming: You overcome your limitations and realize your highest potential. At the same time it provides the foundation and skills to succeed.

As a leader in energy based education since 1980, Nancy Risley recognizes that education is a transformational healing process. As a successful massage and polarity therapist, author and teacher, her vision is to help you realize your dream of doing work that is creative and supports all aspects of who you are. As a highly skilled massage or polarity therapist, or aesthetician, you can experience the joy of helping people to lead healthier and happier lives. Whether you work in a spa or create your own business, you will have levels of satisfaction as well as increased flexibility, control and income.

Excellent education is not by chance; it comes from years
of listening to employers, graduates and students to find the best way to teach the most valuable information to make you successful.

You can be a Massage Therapist or Aesthetician in as little as 6 months full time, 9 months in the Mother’s Hours program or 12 months in the part-time evening program. Or you can take RYSE or Polarity to add to your present skills.

Narrating our life imbues our experiences with meaning that help us makes sense of life events.

Through telling our stories we engage in a natural developmental process of personal transformation.

The more conscious and active we are in this process, the more we shape our lives into a story in which we know our deepest selves, are more intimately connected in our relationships with others, and feel empowered to live our lives more fully and authentically.
